Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal Treatment (Endodontic Therapy) is a course of treatment which is focussed around removal of infection within the pulp of a tooth, followed by protection of this tooth once cleaned to prevent further infections from occurring.
What is the root canal?
The root canal can be thought of as a hollow chamber which runs through the tooth. The camber contains nerve tissues, blood vessels and other cellular entities.
When is Root Canal Treatment required?
Often the first sign of a threatened tooth is pain, inflammation or associated swelling, either around the tooth in question or below it. If a tooth is badly broken or the infection is progressive and further infections are likely, Dr Gurs Sehmi may recommend Root Canal Treatment, in order to cure any infection and save the tooth itself.
What is the procedure?
The infected areas within the tooth and the root are removed. The tooth will no longer have a blood supply and the cleaned out canal is filled and sealed. Often Dr Gurs Sehmi will recommend that a crown is placed on the tooth to increase the strength and prognosis of the tooth.
