Dental Examination
Routine Dental Examination
As many dental problems do not cause pain in the early stages, it is important to have regular dental check ups on a regular basis.
During a routine dental check up, we will check the following parts of your mouth:
Facial Muscles
By checking and feeling facial muscles, we can scan for any mouth related lumps and bumps, and make any arrangements to do any further investigations if necessary.
Cheeks and Lips
We check the internal (mucosal) surfaces of the whole mouth, looking for anything that shouldn’t be there. There are many conditions which affect the body, which can cause changes in way the inside of your cheeks and lips look like.
Tongue
Like the cheeks, the tongue needs to be checked for any changes in the normal appearance.
Gums
Gum disease is the most common dental problem in the UK. This condition can break down the bone around your teeth, without you even feeling the slightest pain, until its too late!
Bleeding gums when you brush is one of the first signs of gum disease, and if you suffer from this, then it is very important that you see your dentist, so that you can control this condition.
Teeth
There are many potential problems with teeth, and we check for dental decay, sensitivity, any breakages, and leaking fillings. If we find something, we always try and show you what is going on, with our state-of-the-art intra oral cameras.
Bite
The way your teeth bite together can sometimes cause problems with teeth, or even the jaw joints or muscles. By assessing your bite, we can sometimes see potential problems, before they cause you bigger problems.
The Advanced Cosmetic Dental Examination
If you are considering a lot of dental work, to improve the appearance of your teeth, and smile, then we will often recommend the Advanced Cosmetic Dental Examination.
In addition to assessing the health of the whole mouth, as detailed above, we take several additional aspects into account, so that we can plan the cosmetic dental work. Some of the things we look at are:
- Assessment of the smile line
- Assessment of the lip line, and how much tooth shows when you smile
- Assess how much tooth shows at rest
- The inclination of the teeth, and how much light is reflected, which has an impact on how white your teeth appear
- Assessment of the harmony of the smile, and teeth which fall outside the ‘golden proportion’
- Assessment of the colour of the teeth, and suitability for whitening
- A host of other factors
In all, this assessment lasts an hour and a half, and will most likely be the most advanced dental examination you have ever had!
After assessing all the above, we can put together a treatment plan for you. We will also explain every aspect of the treatment, so that you know what will be happening at every treatment session.
