Dental Bridges
A Dental Bridge is a lab made false tooth, which attaches onto a tooth on either side (or both sides) of where the missing tooth is (or multiple teeth are).
A bridge can be made in many different ways, dependant on the clinical situation, clients needs, and any budget considerations.
One of the most common types is where the tooth on one or both sides of the space is adjusted, so it can hold a crown (or a cap), and the false tooth is attached to that crown.
Black Lines on Dental Bridges
In the past, bridges, like crowns used to be made on a black metal skeleton, with a white porcelain coating on it. These look fine when they are fitted, but over time, the black metal can start showing through.
At Onyx Dental, we only use bridges which don’t contain any metal. Not only does this look more natural when the bridge is placed, but you can be sure that the edge wont start showing through at a later date!
Dental Bridge or Dental Implants?
When a client comes in, wanting to replace a missing tooth, the question is normally, “Should I have a dental implant or a dental bridge?”
The answer is not simple, and it depends on what you are looking for. In most cases the difference in the fee will only be a few hundred pounds, which isn’t much when you consider that the bridge can be expected to last 10-15 years, and the implant will most likely last even longer!
With dental implant treatment, the time it take to have your final teeth placed can be anything from 4-9 months, depending on the exact treatment plan. With a bridge, this can be placed within a month.
A dental bridge will require the teeth either side of the space to be adjusted. This can potentially reduce the life span of the teeth, and they may need additional treatment at a later date if there are any symptoms.
With a dental implant, there is no adjustment of neighbouring teeth, and a dental implant is the closest thing to having your natural teeth back, you can floss and clean them normally.
